Recently ExxonMobil, as an extension of its ongoing commitment to math and science education, gave a $10,000 donation to the 2008 LSU Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) open-wheel racing team.

The Formula SAE competition attracts over 140 schools and thousands of students annually. Student teams design and build a prototype race car that could be produced and marketed. The competition is judged on a variety of categories, including on-track performance, cost and marketing, and design which allows students the opportunity to gain practice and understanding in all areas of the automotive engineering industry. The team that creates the best overall package wins.

ExxonMobil provided the LSU team sponsorship funds and various oils and grease. The LSU team is one of three teams to receive an ExxonMobil sponsorship; also sponsored in 2008 are the Duke University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Teams.

The competition will be held at the Ford Proving Grounds in Michigan on May 14-18, 2008. For more information on LSU's team go to tigerracing.lsu.edu.
